This exercise demonstrates how to capture or record a macro. It details how to highlight two lines of text in the notepad program, change the font style to Bold and resize the font.
Getting Started
To begin this exercise, open the notepad program. (Click on the Windows Start button, type notepad in the Search field and press Enter.) Type two lines of text into the notepad window. It can be anything at all or just copy and paste the following two lines into notepad.
We are testing the capture option of Keyboard Express. The font style, bold option and size should all change after running the macro. |
Setting up the macro
Next, run Keyboard Express. From the Keyboard Express - Explorer click on the Capture icon in the Actions column to open the Create New Macro window.
The blinking cursor should be in the edit box. If the cursor is not in the edit box, click on the edit box with the mouse to place it there. Next, hold down the CTRL key, the SHIFT key and the B key all at the same time and then release them. CTRL+SHIFT+B should appear in the edit box. This is the hotkey used to invoke the macro.
Assign a nickname to the macro as a reminder of what the macro does. For the nickname, enter Resize Font. Press OK to open the Capture a Macro window. Make sure that the When Alt Key is Pressed, Capture it Twice option is not checked and click on the Capture button.
The Keyboard Express window will minimize, leaving the notepad window open containing the two lines of text. Place the text cursor at the beginning of the first line. (This will not be recorded, as Keyboard Express does not record mouse movements.)
Keystrokes to be recorded
To highlight the text, hold down the Shift key and then press the Down Arrow key twice. Press Alt + O to open the Format menu. Press F to open the Font window.
Type the word "arial" (without the quotes) to select the Arial font. Press the Tab key to move to the next field. Now type "bold" (without the quotes) to select the Bold font style. Press the Tab key to move to the font size. Use the numbers from the keyboard, not the number pad, and type 16 to change the font size to 16. Press Enter to save the changes and close the Font window.
To finish capturing the macro, press CTRL+SHIFT+B. The Capture Complete window appears. Click OK to return to the Keyboard Express - Explorer. The new macro should now be displayed in the list of created macros.
Play back the macro
To test the macro, return to the notepad program. Enter another two lines of text or modify the font settings of the original two lines of text. When the macro was captured the font was changed in the two lines of text. The font needs to be reset to the default settings or select a different font. Otherwise, when the macro runs during the test, it would try to change the font to the existing font settings and appear as if the macro did nothing.
After changing fonts, move the cursor to the beginning of the first line of the text. Press the CTRL+SHIFT+B hotkey and watch as the macro highlights the text and changes the font.
